I don’t always practice safe surfing but here’s a newsflash, you probably don’t either. It used to be that if you didn’t go looking for trouble you wouldn’t find any but things just ain’t that simple anymore. There’s a special place in malware hell for everyone.
Here’s another newsflash: I’m impatient, I don’t pay attention, I’m overtired, I’m lazy, I’m in a hurry and when I’ve got a problem I want it solved like now. I go looking for this or that or the other thing to fix my problem and the next thing I know I have creepy pictures of diet things, Dr. Oz and and a puffy version Ellen DeGeneres popping up allover my screen. Why Ellen I wonder. I can’t get back to Google because some program has taken over all my browsers and another one is screaming at me to SCAN NOW! Before I know it I’ve downloaded five more things disguised as the thing I was looking for and now I’m completely screwed.
People get malware for all kinds of reasons. The last time I got hit I was looking for this:
And you see where that black arrow is pointing? Well I wasn’t paying attention and I clicked it. As you can see the link I clicked isn’t from AVG at all and I ended up with hijacked browsers and the whole shebang. Welcome to malware hell…again.
If you’re anything like me, you didn’t buy the extended warranty for the reasons I outline in my article, Hey PC, Here Are Your Seven Steps To Freedom From Being An Extended Warranty Sucker, and so it goes, you’re just going to have to clean up your own mess like Mama taught you. It’s better this way. Stop wasting your money, you got this.
Enter my big tool. Wanna see it? Brace yourself, because it is massive.
Here it is:
I’ve been using MajorGeeks.com since 2006 because, quite frankly, they are just made of awesome. They have helped me resolve every malware issue I have ever had and the service is free. When it comes to getting rid of malware I’m not going to lie, it’s rarely easy. And when I said I had a big tool, I meant it. The site is huge and sprawling and can be hard to navigate. There’s so much information it’s almost overwhelming. Fear not. I’ve put together a little field guide to help you through it. Here are the steps that will save your life soldier:
1. Select “Support Forum” from the top of the home page.
2. Select “Register” from the top left of the Support Forum page.
4. Select the “Malware Removal” forum.
5. Select the sticky thread called “READ AND RUN ME FIRST“
6. Read that thread very carefully and follow each step.
7. Once you’ve completed it post the logs as requested.
8. Wait patiently for someone to assist you, they will get to you in time.
*tip If you’re having trouble completing the steps due to browser hijacking, try installing and running your steps from Safari.
The Geeks are pure awesomeness, as I said, but they can get downright military on you if you don’t follow the few simple requests they have so make sure you check out the sticky thread called “Forum Rules and Guidelines“. This is for your own safety soldier, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Also keep in mind that you will need to uninstall any “borrowed” or otherwise questionable software from your computer before they will help.
My last bit of advice, work slowly and read carefully. Don’t skim or try to skip a step, you’ll only be hurting yourself.
Oh and when they hump your sorry butt out of the jungle, please make sure to give them MAJOR THANKS and most importantly share your big tool with others in need.
Come hang with me I’m fun! And who knows, you might even pick up a thing or two!
Do it right here it’s so easy!
