Let me begin by saying that I find the act of finding movers terrifying. Toronto movers even more so. I speak from experience. I’ve moved a lot in my life. Don’t believe me? Here are some highlights:
Some cabin in the bush to Belone’s house on Birch Street where I lived upon birth
Great Whale River (Kuujjuarapik)
Army barracks where the snow would come in under the door.
Bannerman Street. Blue and white house. Crab apple tree out front.
Great Whale River (Kuujjuarapik)
Army barracks. In some months the salt water from Hudson Bay would seep into the fresh water source thus my Tang orange juice was often salty.
Green house on Queen Street.
Apartment on Main Street (dump).
Dr. Young’s apartment on Young Street, (Grandma Popert lived next door).
House my parents built on Queen Street which now has lion statues out front. (This is fairly intense for Chapleau).
Yellow house on Young Street. My basement cave.
RR#2 Old farmhouse. My Mom caught a bat inside the house once when we first moved in. I had a horse named Tidy.
Shacked up with a high school mate.
RR#2 to finish high school. No further bat situations.
Shared house with the dancer and his roommate that ripped off my bank account and all $400 I had at the time.
Garden home with creepy landscaper guy who would pass out drunk on the floor surrounded by pizza boxes.
2 bedroom apartment shared with 2 other flight-attendants; my bed in the living room as rescue operation from creepy passed out pizza guy.
Lennox Addington Residence, (Boy’s hall because somebody screwed up).
Back to 2 bedroom apartment shared with 2 other flight-attendants; my bed in the living room.
Lennox Addington Residence, (Girl’s hall this time).
Iqualuit, NWT (at the time)
Hull Beach, NWT (at the time)
Army barracks. Chef run kitchens. Amazing food.
Yellowknife, NWT (at the time)
Highrise downtown with friend from Yellowknife. I was always flying and never there…she moved back to Yellowknife.
House on 16th Ave NW.
Bf’s apartment by the airport.
Basement apartment on Summerland.
Basement apartment with France with the super nice landlord who took great care of us.
2nd floor apartment with Julie and Valerie by the embassy’s where neighbors consistently called the cops on us for disturbing the peace.
Horrible, freezing apartment on Rue Colonial, (blue and purple walls, major dump).
Bf’s place on Laurier.
Johnny’s apartment on Bank St (Johnny= owners of the bar I worked at).
Residence. Don’t know which one. I had a broken leg and was on serious painkillers for most of my stay.
Vaughan Rd. bachelor #1.
Vaughan Rd. 1+ den bdrm.
Vaughan Rd. bachelor #2 and moonlighted at bf’s, (now husband’s), residence apartment at York University.
Isabella St. Actually moved in with bf, (now husband), but paid for Vaughan Rd. apt. Commitment issues.
100 Wellesley with husband. Yup, married him. Gave up my own apartment.
Margueretta Street (crazy landlords and upstairs sex kittens – played Indiana Jones theme at full volume to cover the sex kitten din).
Burnhamthorpe Rd. condo, (luxury).
Kirwin Ave. condo, (old folks).
Bloor West/Junction. LOVE. Never moving again. Ok, probably moving again but not for a long time.
It is true, I am a nomad. I come from a nomadic clan. I have a lot of experience so when I tell you this thing, you best believe me. I’ve moved in every way possible in my life. Parents, friends, suitors, solo, solo with husband, expensive movers, cheap movers and kind relatives.
The best, BAR NONE, movers I have ever, ever used= Zaid Moving. This is Zaid:
He came recommended by an ex-student who has used Zaid Moving for years. She swore by them for service and price and so we checked them out. It pays to have ex-students, thanks Britta Perry…if that is in fact your real name.
Here’s the thing. The Zaid Moving website states:
Fees all up front, no surprises at the moving day. you pay only after the move is done and you are 100% happy with it. if you are not satisfied simply don’t pay.
Granted, I have not tested the “don’t pay” thing, but there would be absolutely no reason to based on my experience.
Let me just say up front that I don’t work for Zaid Moving, I have no affiliation with the people or company whatsoever, I just really loved my experience with them. Pause for a moment and think about the last time you ever heard anyone say anything like that about movers. Seriously, the day was flawless. The experience was flawless.
You know when you email or call a moving company and you get that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach that the conversation is going to be a little bit of hell? We spoke to more than a few this time, and yes, mostly hell…
but not Zaid.
Zaid responded quickly, politely, professional and was totally upfront about the pricing. In our case there was a flat rate to get the guys and truck to us and then a very reasonable hourly for the two guys, (this amount would change based on number of movers you would need for the size of your move). The wild card is that you can bring your own mover too. In my case: husband. Aside from tip, that was it. We moved a 2 bedroom condo, (about 1300ft sq), for $600 plus tip…and we rounded up on the time. Plus, they had to wait for us at the destination because we took some time to clean at the old place. In fairness, we purged some stuff before the move, (and old couch and dining set, some sundry items), and I do pride myself on packing skills, (see list of moves above), but still, we have a lot of crap.
I’m not saying you couldn’t get cheaper, of course you could. There are a plethora of doods on Kijiji with trucks willing to help you out. I’m sure they’re great. Best of luck.
But seriously, and I haven’t really even gotten to the heart of it yet. Here it is: The movers from Zaid Moving were tremendously conscientious and tremendously polite. Homes introduced himself by name first thing, and then checked with me throughout the day to make sure stuff was going how and where I wanted it. It was kind of like a crazy dream. Sort of like, “this can’t be my moving day…moving days never go like this”, but it did. I’m telling you people, it did.
So you know, I guess what I’m saying is go ahead, go online and do your research, ask around. I bet you won’t find a better moving company than Zaid Moving. I bet you won’t.
Now you know. And you also know why I haven’t written a blog post since July. I’ve been a bit busy. Here’s their contact info:
